Crissy Himelstein

MA, LPC, CPCS, RPT-S the founder and owner of Sunshine Child and Family Counseling, LLC

Hello, I am Crissy Himelstein, the founder and owner of Sunshine Child and Family Counseling, LLC. I have two decades of experience as a state licensed counselor, working with children, teens, adults and families. After receiving my B.A. in Psychology, I earned a Master’s in Psychology with a specialty in Professional Counseling. Since then, I have developed a wide range of experience in community mental health, private practice, and crisis intervention services.

I am certified as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor (CPCS) and a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor (RPT-S). I am a member of the Association for Play Therapy/Georgia chapter branch, LPCA of Georgia, and EMDRIA (EMDR International Association).

In 2010, I became interested in play therapy, and I earned my RPT (Registered Play Therapy) credentials. Watching the success of play therapy, I am convinced that the language and power of play can help children learn new skills and adaptive behaviors. I also earned my RPT-S, which qualifies me to be a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor. My leadership role as owner includes supervising therapists that are currently working toward their RPT.

While working toward my RPT credentials, I had a vision to create a practice designed for children, adolescents and families. So, in 2012, I launched Sunshine Child and Family Counseling, LLC. Over the years, I have added a team of dedicated clinicians with the same passion I have for helping others. Together, we provide skilled care for our valued clients, and we have recently expanded to include expert counseling services for adults.

Committed to professional growth, I am currently working towards a certification in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). EMDR is a therapy that helps people of all ages heal from trauma or distressing life experiences. Through bilateral stimulation, EMDR helps activate the brain’s natural healing process. I have also seen results with the use of yogic breath and movement, effective for very young children through adults.

Although I treat a wide range of ages and symptoms, I have special expertise in attention deficit/hyperactivity traits, anxiety, life adjustments, learning differences, mood disturbances, and trauma. I often collaborate with parents to discover various ways to respond to their child and build healthy connections. As a parent myself, this is especially rewarding.

I also work with adults, counseling them through major life transitions and adjustments, and helping them discover new things about themselves. I help adult clients sort through their own history and childhood, and assist them as they deal with the effects of recent trauma or limiting beliefs that inhibit them. I enjoy incorporating poly vagal theory, and see positive results in both adults and children.

When I am not working, I enjoy spending quality time with my husband, two wonderful children, extended family, and friends. I also enjoy reading, yoga, attending professional training, and planning my next beach vacation.

If you have any questions about play therapy or the services we provide, please give us a call. We would love to talk with you! There are some helpful websites that explain even more about play therapy and EMDR. My personal email is: info@sunshinechildcounseling.com
